Methods and Goals

Whatcom Counseling & Psychiatric Clinic offers addiction counseling and treatment using the Matrix Model, an empirically-based approach first developed in 1984.

The Matrix Model incorporates Cognitive Behavioral Therapy in a non-judgmental atmosphere designed to help individuals change their behavior by understanding how addiction affects the brain. The primary goal of each session is to create an environment that motivates the participant to want to return to the next session of treatment.

Outpatient Treatment Services

Through individual sessions and group therapy, Westcoast Counseling offers a wide range of daytime and evening treatment services:

Assessments consist of a two-hour interview and written test to determine diagnosis and treatment recommendations.

Intensive Outpatient Program can be customized to meet an individual’s specific needs. It can also include the 72-hour court-mandated program required for a deferred prosecution for DUI and other offenses.

Co-Occurring Disorder Group works with individuals who have both a mental health diagnosis and substance abuse issues.

Relapse Prevention Groups wprovide support to those who are at risk for relapse or who may have already experienced a relapse. The Intensive Relapse Prevention Group meets twice weekly, and involves family and support persons in some of the educational sessions.

Continuing Care Groups offer gender-specific group therapy for those who have completed the Intensive Outpatient Program or to provide ongoing support.

Individual and Family Counseling is offered independently or in conjunction with treatment groups.

Relapse Prevention Groups provide support to those who are at risk for relapse or who may have already experienced a relapse. The  Intensive Relapse Prevention Group meets twice weekly, and involves family members in relapse counseling.
